Boudoir Photography for Every Body Type

One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that you somehow need the “right” body for it.

You really don’t.

A good professional boudoir photographer works with your body rather than expecting you to fit a particular idea of what a boudoir photograph should look like.

Curves, shape, movement, expression and posture can all be celebrated. The right camera angle, pose and lighting can completely transform an image, drawing attention to the features you love and creating photographs that are flattering without making you look like somebody else.

You don't need to arrive knowing how to pose either.

Photographer Arif Gardner will guide you throughout the session, from the position of your hands and shoulders to where to look, how to stand or sit and even the smallest changes in posture.

Often moving an arm a couple of inches, turning the body slightly towards the light or changing the angle of your face is all it takes to make a photograph work beautifully.

That guidance is a major part of the shoot.

Tasteful Doesn't Have to Mean Boring

Boudoir photography can be sensual without being explicit.

It can be elegant, glamorous, dramatic, romantic, playful or quite edgy. The style is completely up to you and the limits are discussed before and during the shoot.

Some clients prefer beautiful lingerie photographs. Others might choose an oversized shirt, bodysuit, favourite dress, stockings, heels or simply a carefully positioned sheet.

And sometimes the most striking photograph reveals very little at all.

A silhouette, the shape of a shoulder, a backlit figure or an image partly hidden by lace can be considerably more powerful than showing everything.

Our St Albans Boudoir Photography Studio

We have our own professional photography studio at AG Studios in St Albans, giving us complete control over lighting and privacy.

Using professional studio lighting, we can create anything from beautifully soft and flattering portraits through to much stronger, moodier images with shadows and directional light.

Dark backgrounds can create a dramatic, almost cinematic look, while lighter sets produce softer and more delicate photographs.

Because lighting is such an important part of boudoir photography, we don't simply put somebody in front of a backdrop and start taking pictures. The lighting is adjusted throughout the session to complement your pose, clothing and the type of photograph we are creating.

Sometimes a Bigger Studio Creates Something Special

Our own Hertfordshire studio works brilliantly for many boudoir shoots, but sometimes it's worth thinking bigger.

For a more elaborate boudoir photography session, we can hire a larger photographic studio or location with purpose-built sets.

Imagine photographing in a beautiful bedroom set with a large bed and textured walls, sitting on a kitchen worktop for something a little more playful, using a freestanding bath or shooting through lengths of lace suspended from the ceiling.

Large studios can also offer different furniture, sofas, chairs, windows, staircases and textured backgrounds, allowing us to create several completely different looks during one shoot.

It turns the session into much more of an experience and gives us enormous creative freedom.

Before booking a location, we can discuss the type of images you love and find a studio or setting that suits the look we want to achieve.

"But I Have No Idea How to Pose!"

That's possibly the sentence we hear most often.

And that's absolutely fine.

You are not expected to know how to pose – that's the photographer's job.

Arif will give you full posing guidance throughout your boudoir photoshoot. Rather than simply telling you to “look natural”, he can demonstrate poses and make small adjustments as the shoot progresses.

Where should your hands go? Which way should your knees point? Should you look at the camera or away from it? How do you sit on the edge of a bed without feeling awkward?

We'll guide you.

The first few photographs are often simply about settling into the experience. Once you see some of the images appearing on the back of the camera, confidence usually begins to grow and the shoot becomes much more relaxed.

Creative Lighting Makes the Difference

Photography literally means drawing with light, and nowhere is that more relevant than in professional boudoir photography.

Soft lighting can flatter skin and create a romantic, delicate feel. Side lighting can emphasise shape and curves. Backlighting can produce beautiful silhouettes, while carefully controlled shadows can create something much more dramatic.

We can change the lighting throughout the session so that your final collection isn't simply a hundred variations of the same photograph.

You might leave with soft, elegant colour images, dramatic black and white portraits, silhouettes and more editorial-style photographs – all from the same boudoir shoot.

Your Privacy Comes First

Understandably, privacy is particularly important with boudoir photography.

Your shoot is handled professionally and discreetly from beginning to end. What you are comfortable wearing and showing is always your decision and there is never any pressure to go beyond that.

Following the session, your photographs can be viewed privately through a secure password-protected online gallery, allowing you to choose the images you love.

What Should I Bring to a Boudoir Photoshoot?

We normally suggest bringing a selection rather than trying to decide on one outfit beforehand.

Lingerie is an obvious choice, but think beyond that too. A man's white shirt, jacket, bodysuit, robe, favourite heels, stockings, jewellery or even a simple sheet can all photograph beautifully.

Different textures are particularly good on camera – lace, silk, satin and sheer fabrics allow us to play with both light and shadow.

You are also welcome to have your hair and make-up professionally styled beforehand or bring a hair and make-up artist with you.

Most importantly, bring things that make you feel good.

A Boudoir Photoshoot Can Be Just for You

Not every set of boudoir photographs needs to be created for somebody else.

For many women, the best reason to have a boudoir shoot is simply because they want to.

Bodies change. Life changes. Confidence changes.

A professional photoshoot is an opportunity to stop for a moment and celebrate the person you are now rather than waiting until you've lost weight, gained weight, become fitter or reached some imaginary point when you think you'll be “ready”.
