For most customers today, we recommend having old recordings converted into MP4 digital video files.

MP4 is convenient because the files can be copied onto computers, hard drives and suitable USB memory sticks and can easily be backed up.

Once your old camcorder footage has been digitised, you can also make additional copies for members of the family.

Instead of having one ageing tape sitting in a cupboard, the recording can finally be safely duplicated.

Imagine finding footage of your children's first Christmas and then being able to send copies to all of them.

That's one of the real advantages of converting old video tapes to digital.

Your Original Tapes Stay at AG Studios

For irreplaceable family recordings, this is particularly important.

We don't send your tapes away to another company for processing.

Professional Video Transfer Equipment

There is more to transferring an old video tape than simply connecting an old VHS machine to a computer.

We digitise footage through our editing system and use professional equipment including a Time Base Corrector (TBC).

A Time Base Corrector can help stabilise the video signal from ageing analogue tapes, reducing some of the picture instability and drop-outs that can occur with older recordings and helping to maintain synchronisation between picture and sound.

It cannot magically recreate information which has physically disappeared from a badly damaged tape, but using the correct equipment can make a significant difference when transferring ageing analogue recordings.

Our aim is always to retrieve the best possible picture and sound from your original tape.

What Happens to the Digital Files?

Once transferred, your recordings can be supplied as digital files which you can store on a USB memory stick or external hard drive.

Digital files are far easier to look after than a box full of ageing tapes.

More importantly, they can be backed up.

We always recommend keeping your precious family recordings in more than one place. For example, you might have one copy on your computer, another on an external drive and perhaps another with a member of the family or in secure cloud storage.

The important thing is that there should no longer be just one fragile original copy.

Can You Transfer a Whole Box of Old Video Tapes?

Absolutely.

In fact, many customers arrive with several tapes at once after clearing a loft, moving house or sorting through a parent's belongings.

You don't necessarily have to know what is on every tape.

Bring the collection in and we can discuss the best way to deal with it.

We can also offer discounts when multiple VHS or camcorder tapes are transferred at the same time.

It is often an ideal opportunity to finally sort out an entire family video archive rather than doing one tape at a time.

During the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, thousands of weddings were filmed onto VHS and various camcorder formats.
